Upstairs there are two oceanfront primary bedrooms with king four poster mahogany beds, and french doors opening onto a spacious oceanfront lanai. This Kekaha estate was featured in the book the Hawaiian House Now and was one of only two houses from Kauai in the book published in 2007. Hawaii still lives in Kekaha said Gail Miller of the sleepy West Kauai town she lived in since 1998, when this publicized and well known designer purchased this Sugar Mill Manager home. Originally built in 1933, it was purchased by Miller after she first saw this beach side house. It was the original features, many of which were preserved during the extensive renovation, that attracted her to this house. Rich Douglas fir floors, gracious archways, ceilings fabricated from sugar cane, and large rooms that opened onto the outdoors provided the ingredients to create and preserve a piece of rich Hawaiian heritage. Neutral colors have been used to highlight the beauty of the outdoor ocean setting she said in describing the interior finishes. Surfers and tourists line the shore to watch the sun drop into the western horizon at an hour that used to bustle with workers returning from the fields to their homes here in Kekaha.
