Find the golf course of your dreams on Kauai. From Princeville on the North Shore to Poipu on the South Shore, Kauai is home to some of the world’s best golf. Visitors can play beautiful resort courses or affordable independent courses, where the rough is lined with lava rocks while mountain ranges and seascapes frame the greens.
North Shore
Makai Course – (808) 826-1912 – $200+
The Makai Course’s recent renovation by Robert Trent Jones Jr. features the introduction of seashore paspalum turf grass on to all tees, fairways and greens, providing spectacular playing surfaces for golfers of all skill levels.
For the casual golfer who wants to enjoy a leisure round of golf with family and friends, Makai Golf Club at the St. Regis Princeville Resort is also proud to offer the popular 9-hole Woods Course.
As the site of the 1978 World Cup and six straight years of LPGA Tour events from 1986 to 1991 the Makai Course’s place in golf history is secure. And even though Princeville’s Prince Course is a contemporary gem, many golfers find Makai more playable and, hence, more enjoyable.
Prince Course (currently closed)
Usually rated #1 or #2 in all the islands by Golf Digest. With 350 gorgeous acres to work with, Robert Trent Jones, Jr. took full advantage of the cliffs, gorges, and natural rolling scenery. When it opened in 1990, the Prince Course was hailed by Golf Digest as the best new resort course in the country. And it became known throughout Hawaii as one of the most challenging and rewarding courses one can play.
East Side
Wailua Municipal Course – (808) 241-6666 – $48+
Wailua Golf Course is a beautiful seaside layout and Kauai’s sole municipal golf course. It is recognized as one of the best municipal golf courses in Hawaii, as well as one of America’s best public courses. The U.S. Golf Association has held three National Amateur Public Links championships at Wailua (1975, 1985, 1996). It parallels the beach on Kauai’s Coconut Coast so the smell of sea air, the constant crosswind and the roar of the surf are comforting companions.
Kauai Lagoons Golf Club – (808) 241-6000 – $150+
The award-winning Kauai Lagoons Golf Club, which boasts some of the best holes in Hawaii golf, gorgeous views and exceptional service, has completed a transformation making it better than ever. Jack Nicklaus’ legendary Kiele experience now features three unique nines for 27 holes of incredible golf on Kauai’s east shore.
The scenic and challenging ocean holes, renamed the Kiele Moana Nine (the former Kiele back nine), have re-opened with TifEagle putting surfaces, bunkers, and the addition of three new holes. One new hole sits on the island’s edge and makes the Kiele Moana the longest stretch of continuous ocean holes (over a half mile) of any course in Hawaii. You’ll definitely want to bring your camera.
Puakea Golf Course – (808) 245-8756 – $100+
The Puakea Golf Course is Kauai’s newest 18-hole golf course. When Hurricane Iniki hit Kauai in 1992, construction on this Kauai golf course came to a halt. In 1997, the course was able to open its infamous 10 holes. This is why Puakea has the odd distinction of being named one of America’s “Best Nine-Hole Courses” by Sports Illustrated. In 2002, architect Robin Nelson was finally brought back to finish the final eight.
South Shore
Po’ipu Bay Golf Course – (808) 742-8711 – $200+
The Poipu Bay Golf Course, famous for hosting the PGA of America’s Grand Slam of Golf from 1994 to 2006, is spread out over 210 acres of gently rolling land perched on Kauai’s south coast. This beautiful Kauai golf course, designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr., sits between rolling ocean surf and stunning mountain vistas. Particularly striking is the distant rock formation known as Mahualepu, which appears to be a relaxing giant Hawaiian god, totally submerged except for his pointy nose.
Kiahuna Golf Club – (808) 742-9595 – $100+
In 1984, Kauai’s Kiahuna Golf Club opened to much acclaim as the first course located on the south shore resort area of Poipu. Twenty years later it has undergone a thorough renovation, including a transition to Seashore Paspalum greens and added yardage.
The par-70 Kauai golf course is famous for Robert Trent Jones Jr.’s careful attention to incorporating ancient Hawaiian archeological and historical sites (including blind spider caves in a small outcrop of lava tubes at No. 2) and for its many doglegs, including six on the inward nine.
Kukuiolono Golf Course – (808) 332-9151 – $10+
This nine-hole course nestled on the hills above Kalaheo may be one of Kauai’s best kept golfing secrets. Originally built as the personal course of sugar king Walter McBride, Kukuiolono Golf Course offers generous fairways, limited hazards, and panoramic views of Kauai’s scenic southwest side. Great course for beginners. Following its creation, McBryde donated the course to the people of Kauai in 1919 and those fortunate enough to find this gem can give their “aloha” as they pass his grave near the 8th tee.
